Climate change
We continue to take local action in the global fight against climate change, including campaigning for more renewable energy in the town.
In 2020, Central Bedfordshire Council’s sustainability plan was adopted by the Council to support the area’s move towards zero carbon. A year later on 27th September 2021, a motion by Cllr Victoria Harvey prompted Leighton-Linslade Town Council to declare a climate emergency and commit to becoming carbon-neutral by 2030.
The climate emergency comes to Leighton Buzzard
Until recently, the extreme signs of climate change may not have felt prevalent in Leighton Buzzard. Now, that is no longer the case, as locally we have experienced the extreme 40 degree heat in summer, droughts, heavy rainfall, as well as unseasonably warm winters. We’ve previously partnered with the Leighton-Linslade Ecology Group to raise awareness of these changes within our town. Many of our residents are feeling the effects already, having been plunged into fuel poverty with the cost of living crisis and unaffordable heating costs because of our reliance on climate-wrecking fossil fuels.
