Campaigning for clean air with Linslade School

Children are standing in a group holding posters they've drawn, which say Stop Pollution and Save the Planet.

In June 2021, we supported Linslade School in asking parents to stop engine idling, to fight against air pollution. We aimed to raise awareness about improving the air quality for pupils and residents in Mentmore Road.

The campaign involved pupils creating art about air pollution and idling engines for display outside the school. Our group joined with pupils to speak to drivers about air pollution, and raise awareness of the harmful effects engine idling has not just on the environment, but for anyone inside the car as well.

Engine idling and health

The Royal College of Physicians estimates that air pollution is linked to around 80,000 deaths a year in the UK, with engine idling being a contributing factor. It’s important that we stop idling engines, particularly outside schools, as studies have shown this type of pollution to be particularly damaging to children’s development, especially their lungs.
