Learning how to do an ecological survey

Yesterday afternoon Melanie Douglas, an ecologist from CBC, came along to the Community Orchard in Astral Park to show us how to do a basic ecology survey. The most important thing was to survey the same area at different times, so that we could build up a record over time. We marked points every ten metres along two of the paths, then we surveyed along lines reaching ten metres each side from those points. We recorded everything we saw along those lines over a set period (five minutes, today). We’ll return as often as we can, and use the same principles at others of our sites.
